The Nature of Spirit

The Nature of Spirit - Chauncey Giles

For more than a century, Chauncey Giles's The Nature of Spirit, and of Man as a Spiritual Being has remained one of the best introductions to the teachings of the New Church regarding the spiritual world. By as early as 1900, more than a hundred thousand copies, including translations into a number of languages, were in circulation, and through the decades its effect on people of all religious backgrounds has been enormous. The preface to the 1884 edition stated that the demand for this work "has been constant and still continues." One hundred years later this is still true. For this new edition, the nineteenth-century style of punctuation was modernized, and several other minor changes were made that in no way affect the content. It is hoped that these revisions will enhance the reader's enjoyment of what has deservedly become a classic work on one of the most important aspects of NEW Church doctrine (as well as one of the most debated subjects of religious thought in general), and that it will fulfill the author's intention of leading those who read it to a study of the its foundations and source - the theological writings of Emanuel Swedenborg.
